How to Get Your California CCW Permit: Step-by-Step Guide

Obtaining a California Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) permit can seem complicated, but the process is straightforward when you know the steps.
This guide provides a clear overview so you can move through the process confidently.

Step 1 – Determine Your Issuing Agency & Check Eligibility

You must apply for your CCW in the county where you live.

Begin with your county sheriff’s department website.

In some areas, residents of certain incorporated cities are directed to their city police department for the application process.

Once you know your agency, confirm that you meet the basic requirements:

• Be at least 21 years old

• Be a California resident

• Be legally able to possess firearms under state and federal law

Step 2 – Gather Required Documentation

• Valid government-issued photo ID

• Proof of residency (utility bill, lease, etc.)

• Completed CCW application from your issuing agency’s website

Step 3 – Submit Your Application

Complete the application carefully and honestly.

Some counties allow online submissions; others require an in-person appointment.

Step 4 – Interview With Your Issuing Agency

Most agencies schedule an interview after receiving your application.

This meeting verifies your identity and evaluates good moral character.

Step 5 – Live Scan Fingerprinting & Background Check

After receiving your agency’s go-ahead, complete the Live Scan fingerprinting process.

Your fingerprints will be submitted for a state and federal background check.

Step 6 – Complete CCW Training & Range Qualification

Training covers firearm safety, California carry laws, and a live-fire qualification.

💡 Cost Tip: CCW training is usually the most expensive part of the entire process, but our courses typically average about $100 less than other training companies, making it more affordable to complete your permit requirements.

Step 7 – Upload Certificates

Once you have completed your training, upload your training certificates and any other required documents to your issuing agency’s CCW application portal or website.

After your documents are reviewed and everything clears, your issuing agency will email or text you with instructions to come to their office to pick up your permit.
